Gil McDougald was an outstanding yankee player of the 1950s! Born in Nutley, New Jersey on May 19, 1928. he made his MLB debut April 20, 1951 with the Yankees and played his final game with them on october 2, 1960. During these 10 years, he was an exceptional all- around player. Awarded rookie of the year for the American League in 1951, winning over Mickey Mantle! as a super player, Gil won Gold Gloves 8 times. during the 1950s, he was regarded as one of the best infielders around.Hailed for making great diving plays and clutch hitting. He was saluted most for his important infielder role and his performances at bat in the yankees 53 games in 8 world series. Today Gil McDougald is still ranked as one of the all-time best in world series play. A tragic accident changed the life of this superb baseball player. he was hit in the ear by a ball,he ended up losing his hearing in both ears...he accepted it and continued playing for awhile, he spoke of how he missed the sound of the bat hitting the ball. He finally left the yankees - his last game was october 2, 1960 at age 32. |
